Above-grade wall installation
Exterior
- Install insulation on the wood studs.
- Temporarily attach with nails or screws and supporting washers.
- Add an air / weather barrier (optional).
- Seal all joints with sealing tape or a self-adhesive sealing membrane.
- Seal all material transitions with caulking/sealant (openings, electrical boxes, etc.) and prepare window jambs, sills and headers to ensure air- and watertightness.
- Install 1″ x 3″ wood furs (optional).
- Install exterior wall cladding.
Above-grade wall installation
Interior
- Install insulation on the wood studs.
- Temporarily attach with nails or screws and washers.
- Add a vapor barrier.
- Seal all joints with vapor barrier tape.
- Seal all material transitions with caulking/sealant (openings, electrical boxes, etc.) and prepare window jambs, sills and headers to ensure air- and watertightness.
- Install 1″ x 3″ wood furs (optional).
- Install thermal barrier.
Foundation insulation
Exterior
- Make sure that the French drain around the house is functional.
- Install a dry bituminous waterproofing coating on the concrete wall.
- Install the insulation boards vertically over the entire height of the foundation.
- Cover the above-ground portion of the panels with acrylic coating or parging.
- Backfill with soil.
Underslab insulation
New construction
- Soil preparation: Level crushed granular base or sand.
- Install the insulation boards over the entire surface to be insulated.
- Install a vapor barrier polythene over the entire surface (if specified in your local building code) to ensure airtightness, moisture protection and soil gas control.
- Install wire mesh (if required) for slab reinforcement.
- Pour the concrete slab.
Over slab insulation
Renovation
- Existing concrete slab: Make sure to fix cracks or infiltration problems before any work begins.
- Install a vapor barrier polythene over the entire surface (if specified in the building code in your area) to ensure airtightness, moisture protection and soil gas control.
- Install insulation boards over the entire surface to be insulated.
- Install 1″ x 3″ wood furs (optional).
- Install plywood.
- Install floor covering.
